Chapter Fifteen

Wrapped up in Zaroff’s engulfing arms, drifting in the post-orgasmic bliss, Abby was snapped awake as he abruptly released her and climbed hurriedly from the bed.

“I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m needed in the command center.”

“Is everything okay?”

“There’s a problem at the alliance headquarters. I must go,” he declared, already striding away.

“Can Minerva take me to the observation deck? I’d really like to get out of this room.”

“Yes. I’ll speak to her.”

“Thank you,” she called after him, but he’d already disappeared through the opening.

Cosmo had moved to the end of the bed, and as she lay back down, he scurried over the bedcovers and curled against her.

“Hello, precious,” she murmured, stroking him softly. Looking up at her with his wide brown eyes, he hummed contentedly. “Would you like to take a walk? Do you have any idea what I’m saying? No, but you know I’m falling in love with you,” she cooed, as a soft knock echoed through the chamber. “That will be Minerva. She’ll protect us while we’re out and about.”

“Zaroff said you’d like to visit the observation deck,” Minerva declared, striding into the room. “I’m happy to take you.”

“I’d like to go anywhere. I may have recovered from Deep Space Depression, but I’m starting to fall victim to cabin fever.”

“Cabin fever? Is this a serious illness?”

“No, goodness, no. Cabin fever is an expression. It means I’m feeling penned in and I need to get out for a while.”

“Understandable, and you need the exercise. I’ve been directed to take you up to the first level and show you around. That’s the officers’ habitat. There’s a very pleasant gathering area. We’ll visit the observation deck first and go up from there, but there’ll be another officer with us. Zaroff wants you to have a double escort.”

“Am I in that much danger?”

“I don’t believe so, but if he deems a double escort necessary, then it’s necessary, even if only for his own peace of mind. Rest assured I could deal with one of those reptiles with very little bother. I could squeeze the life out of its thin throat with two fingers.”

“I don’t doubt it,” Abby replied, eyeing the tall, muscled female. “Cosmo can come with us, right? I don’t want to leave him here by himself.”

“Of course he can, and he doesn’t need any type of attachment. He’ll follow along with no problem. Furrbits are extremely loyal, and he’s bonded with you. He’ll be your third escort.”

“Perfect. He’ll protect me,” Abby said with a soft laugh. “If that creepy lizard dares to show up, Cosmo can jump on its face and smother it with all that fur!”

“Actually, Cosmo can be as ferocious as he is sweet if he feels threatened, but with two escorts he can remain the adorable little fur ball that he is. Do you want to eat anything before we go? There’s a nourishment center in the gathering area on the first level if you’d prefer. They serve a selection of human foods.”

“I assume a nourishment center is a restaurant.
